Job Description

Summary

Under the supervision of the Building Official, the Building Inspector is a non-exempt position under FLSA. This employee is responsible for enforcing City codes by inspecting buildings, plumbing, electrical and mechanical systems of construction projects and existing structures within the City of Spring Hill. This position should possess a strong mechanical aptitude and effective organizational, public relation and communication skills.

Essential duties

  • Follows the City’s adopted codes in reviewing applications for building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, sign, land, fences, outbuildings and special use permits; 
  • Performs on-site inspections for: light frame residential, footings, walls, underslab, building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, sign, land, fences, outbuildings and final inspections.
  • Computes building permit fees;
  • Reviews plot plans, blueprints, construction detail sketches and specifications for compliance with codes and ordinances;
  • Provides information to contractors, developers, homeowners and the general public;
  • Prepares work log indicating inspections performed and completes checklist;
  • Approve fence, shed, sign, electric, mechanical and plumbing permits.

Building Inspector III

  • Duties as listed above;
  • Assumes responsibilities of Building Official as deemed necessary;

Requirements

Building Inspector I

  • One year of similar or related experience in plumbing, electrical or building is required; 
  • A high school diploma or GED;
  • Valid Kansas driver's license and Class A CDL or ability to obtain such within six months of hire;

Building Inspector II

  • Two years of similar or related experience in plumbing, electrical or building;
  • Meet minimum requirements of Building Inspector I;
  • A high school diploma or GED;
  • Valid Kansas driver's license and Class A CDL or ability to obtain such within six months of hire;
  • ICC certification as a Residential Building Inspector and Property Maintenance Inspector and at least one of ICC certifications for Residential Electrical, Plumbing or Mechanical Inspector.

Building Inspector III

  • Three years of similar or related experience in plumbing, electrical or building;
  • Meet minimum requirements of Building Inspector II;
  • A high school diploma or GED;
  • Valid Kansas driver's license and Class A CDL or ability to obtain such within six months of hire;
  • ICC certification as Residential or Commercial Plan Review, and two of the following ICC certifications: Commercial Electric, Mechanical or Plumbing Inspector.

Salary dependent on qualifications. Salary range for Building Inspector I begins at $19.15/hour. Salary range for Building Inspector II begins at $20.50/hour. Salary range for Building Inspector III begins at $25.36/hour. First review of applications is Friday, Oct. 26.
